The project goal

Turn a hard-to-use area into a connected outdoor living space.

The backyard had an elevated deck and long ramp, but the grade below left the center of the yard without a defined place to gather. The project needed to establish a stable patio elevation, work around the existing structure and create practical transitions between the deck, yard and fence line.

The final plan combined a raised paver patio, curved retaining wall, steps, integrated fire pit and a finished path beside the ramp. Decorative river rock completed the narrow area underneath the ramp where lawn maintenance would be difficult.

Beginning

Planning the footprint and preparing the site

The work began beneath an elevated deck and accessibility ramp, where the existing grade offered little usable patio space. The curved footprint was laid out, the area was excavated and the first retaining-wall courses established the patio elevation.

Middle

Building the wall, base and paver surface

Manufactured wall block created the raised edge and steps. Gravel and leveling material were installed and compacted before the field pavers, contrasting border, edge restraint and polymeric sand brought the surface together.

Finished

A connected outdoor area with clean transitions

The completed project adds a defined gathering space with a built-in fire pit, curved retaining wall, steps and a paver connection along the ramp. River rock beneath the ramp finishes a difficult-to-maintain strip and ties the hardscape into the fence line.

What supports the result

The finished pavers are only one part of the build.

Defined elevation

The curved retaining wall creates a level, usable surface while fitting the deck and ramp layout.

Prepared base

Excavation, compacted gravel and leveling material support the patio beneath the visible pavers.

Controlled edges

Wall caps, border pavers, steel edging and clean cuts define the curves and transitions.

Finished surroundings

Steps, the connecting walkway and river rock make the patio feel intentional within the full yard.
